Note:"This should be required reading for those who talk easily about increasing US national competitiveness. Contributors emphasize the importance of the basic ideology of a country. They set two extremes-individualism and communitarianism-and examine and rank nine countries as to their historical and present conditions. Considered are elements such as freedom of the individual, role of the state, control of production, role of science, and freedom of education. The US, UK, and Mexico are highest in individualism; Japan, Taiwan, and Korea highest in communitarianism; France, Germany, and Brazil are in between. Rankings for competitiveness are greatest for countries with high communitarianism profiles. The excellent national essays are interesting in themselves, pinpointing aids and obstacles to national adjustment to the changing world, including transnational connections. The US chapter illustrates the general theme. Tension, confusion, and lack of competitiveness have resulted from the unresolved and often not recognized conflict between inherited individualism, with institutions and habits of thought based thereon, and the changes required for dealing with many modern problems." - Choice review
